What a great way to celebrate spring with a Spring Fling Dance! As I mentioned yesterday, I went dancing at school. It was 4 hours full of fun and dance. Swing, salsa, waltz, tango, you name it! I am so glad that I went. I met new people and had fun dancing. Sure, I may have stumbled a little bit but I’m just a beginner. At least I can keep on dancing without stopping! My friend, John, said that I learn pretty fast and that I am getting pretty good, which is good. I never thought that I could dance (though, I did take ballet lessons when I was 6). He’s an amazing dancer himself.
John organized the Spring Fling event along with the other officers of the Ballroom Social Club at school (Claudia and Shannon. Thank you guys!). The Ballroom Social is a club where you can learn ballroom dancing and it’s so much fun! All the people that go are pretty chill and relaxed and are willing to have fun.
We started off with decorating, since I arrived a little early. I helped blow balloons and hang some decorations. The balloons kept popping on us after we tied them. No one touched the balloons and they popped. Scary!
The night started off with learning some swing dancing, which was pretty fun. The instructor broke down the steps so that it’d be easier for us to learn. Then, we partnered up with someone and tried it partner dancing. We rotated around the room so that we could dance with different people. It was fun. You can tell who has been dancing for a while and who the beginners are.
The rest of the time (three hours) was just social dancing. They played music and people just danced! At first, they mainly played swing music but they changed it to other types too, such as waltz, tango, salsa, rumba, hustle, and nightclub 2 step. It was so much fun, with everyone dancing with each other. For me, it was interesting to see how each person added their own style to the dancing. Either way, it was so much fun!
Whenever I didn’t know the dance, I just followed the lead. When the lead didn’t know, we just made it up! I got so dizzy spinning around so many times because that’s what the lead wanted me to do. It was so much fun though. Even if you’re not dancing right, it’s fun as long as you laugh at yourself and keep moving. No one cares as long as you’re having fun! And, to tell you the truth, the 4 hours of dancing flew by. It was a bit tiring, I have to admit. Dancing is a great way to get a workout in while having a great time.
Back to nutrition related news (since this is a health blog), the snacks were not all so healthy. There were granola bars and raw vegetables with dip. However, there were also potato chips, candy, Oreos, frosted sugar cookie and all of those types of sweets. Delicious? Sure. Healthy? Not so much. At least it gave people a sugar high to dance.
I have to say that I am so happy that I gave ballroom dancing a try. It’s so much fun!
